An Astonishing 6-Year-Long Mystery
March 22, 2011 is a day that the parents of Rebecca Coriam will never forget, but not for good reason. On that heartbreaking day, their daughter would seem to have disappeared forever from the Disney Wonder cruise ship on which she worked.
She Was A Passionate Cadet
Rebecca went missing when she was just 24 years old. As a teenager, she joined the British Army cadets and went on to study sports science at Plymouth University in Exeter, England. She also worked at her local zoo!
A True People Person
Rebecca always had a knack for working with others, especially youth. She took additional youth studies at Liverpool Hope University and even taught sports at Camp America in Maine. But little did she know that her life would soon change forever.
Her Worst Decision Ever
In 2010, Rebecca made the decision to apply for a staff position with Disney Cruises. Surely enough, her impressive background got her hired. But apparently, her background didn't seem too impressive to the person who some say may have committed an absolutely horrific crime and been responsible for Rebecca's mysterious disappearance.
She Had No Idea What Was About To Happen
Rebecca had a two-month break and reunited with her family for just a few short weeks before starting her new career. It's a real shame she didn't know that her short time with her loved ones would be the last time she'd ever see them. Or is it true that she's still alive like many say she is? Shocking evidence may prove she is.
A Moment Gone Too Soon?
Rebecca's family had no idea that the short two weeks they were reunited with her would be the last time they would see her alive. But according to some reports, even after all of these years since her odd disappearance, Rebecca may still be alive. In fact, she may have even already been spotted in a rather peculiar place far away from home.
A Truly Heartbreaking Message
Rebecca was still able to keep in contact with her family through Facebook and Skype while she was away. Six weeks after she boarded the Wonder and just as it left Los Angeles for Mexico, she sent her mom, Annmaria, a Facebook message to tell her how much she missed her and that she'd call her the next day. Sadly, her mother would never receive that next call. Something was definitely wrong...
She Was Nowhere To Be Found
Back on the ship, Rebecca never showed up for her 9 a.m. shift. The crew searched, but to their surprise, she was nowhere. Little did everyone know that the crew would then be forced by their superiors to hide more extensive evidence about what actually happened to Rebecca.
A Hopeful Phone Call
Soon, Rebecca's parents received a phone call that they hoped would be their daughter. The news was anything but good. Instead of Rebecca, it was a Disney official on the line informing them that their daughter had seemingly vanished. Then the case got even more interesting...
Video Footage Reveals Something Mysterious
Reviewing security video footage from the night Rebecca seemed to disappear, the crew spotted her at 5:45 a.m. talking to someone on one of the ship's phones. But it didn't seem like a friendly conversation. Rebecca looked obviously visibly upset.
Did She Fall Overboard?
Some officials on the Disney Wonder say that Rebecca fell overboard. But even though both the Mexican Navy and U.S. Coast Guard searched throughout the deep blue sea along the ship's route, they found nothing at all. A detective was then called in, and he made one alarming discovery.
Where's Sherlock Holmes When You Need Him?
Since the ship was registered in the Bahamas, the case had to be handled by the Bahamian police. So, the detective flew to Los Angeles to get on board. Strangely, he only spent one day on the ship. He found no clues. In came Rebecca's parents, who realized the case was far from over.
A Parent's Worst Nightmare
When Annmaria and Mike arrived at the ship in Los Angeles, they were told it was believed that Rebecca was washed overboard by the ship's crew pool. And so, officials handed them Rebecca's belongings. Strangely, a pair of slippers that was found looked nothing like something Rebbeca would own. In fact, they weren't hers. So why did the crew say they were? Even more alarming evidence came to light...
A Shocking Twist In The Case
In May, two months after Rebecca vanished, the Coriam family was told that someone attempted to access Rebecca's bank account. But that wasn't the only strange news. Later that year, her parents came to learn that someone had apparently changed the password on Rebbeca's Facebook page. Was it the man she was reportedly seen with months later?
A Journalist Reveals Alarming News
Rebecca's story soon began to make waves. In October, seven months after her disappearance, British journalist Jon Ronson began making inquiries on the Wonder. Oddly, crew members told him they were told to say the event never happened. And that wasn't all he found out...
A Volatile Relationship Adds More Mystery
Ronson was quick to note that Rebecca couldn't have washed overboard from the crew pool, as the walls surrounding it were too high. He also spoke with a friend of Rebecca's, who said that she had been in a volatile relationship. The family then received an absolutely shocking email about where she may be.
Rebecca In Venice?
A day before the anniversary of her disappearance, a woman emailed her father and claimed she'd seen Rebecca with a dark-haired man in Venice the previous August. She was "85% sure" it was her. But the Coriam family wondered how that could be possible, as they received Rebecca's passport when they were given her belongings.
Even More Alarming Evidence
In 2016, the Coriam family revealed that a pair of Rebecca's shorts that were given to them had been ripped, leading to the question of her possibly being violently assaulted.
A Possible Murder Case
In fact, Chester politician Chris Matheson believes that Rebecca may have been murdered. "The more you look into this the more it smells rotten; the more it smells like a crime has taken place," he said.
A Heartbreaking Unsolved Investigation
To this day, Rebecca Coriam's disappearance case remains unsolved. Many people, including prominent figures, believe Disney is leaving out crucial information. Did she really drown in the calm water? Was she murdered? Is she still alive? The truth is out there, but for now, the tragic case remains a mystery.
