She Was Just An Average Gal
If you were to see Susan Boyle taking a stroll through a park before she took the stage on Britain's Got Talent, you probably wouldn't bat an eye. She had graying haphazard hair, dressed modestly, and was really just another average face in the crowd.
Braver Than Most
But despite her ordinary lifestyle, Susan didn't want her to voice to go unheard. The middle-aged Scottish woman always had a passion for singing, and she even took vocal lessons in the past. So, off to audition on Britain's Got Talent she went.
Defied Everyone's Expectations
Standing on stage with millions watching, Susan told infamously opinionated Simon Cowell she was "trying to be a professional singer." Eyes were rolling, and laughter filled the room. But then the music began. Within seconds of singing, everyone was cheering.
The Entire Room Was Floored
No one ever thought that awkward Susan Boyle would have a voice so incredible. She received an audience-wide standing ovation! "When you stood there with that cheeky grin and said, 'I want to be like Elaine Paige,' everyone was laughing at you. No one is laughing now," said host Piers Morgan.
Though Susan would go on to only come in second place on the show, her consistently stunning performances would change her life forever. Not so average anymore, she quickly began making millions.
The Albums Kept Coming
Her first album, I Dreamed a Dream, became the best-selling debut album of all time in the UK and the second best in the US. As of now, the singing sensation has seven albums! And that's not even all she's done...
She Sang For The World's Most Famous
Not only did Susan Boyle go on to sing for the Pope and President Barack Obama, she also sang at Windsor Castle for the Queen! Yet as famous as she was, Susan's life was about to take a turn she'd never expect.
"Susie Simple" Finally Explained
Susan was severely bullied as a child and was nicknamed "Susie Simple" in school for having what she was told was brain damage from being deprived oxygen at birth. But just a few short years after her big performance, she found at she'd been misdiagnosed and actually had Asperger's syndrome, a developmental disorder.
A Relief, But The Struggle Goes Deeper
She was far from devasted. "I always knew it was an unfair label," she said about being called brain damaged. "Now I have a clearer understanding of what's wrong and I feel relieved and a bit more relaxed about myself." Still, she had more struggles to deal with...
Before she rose to fame, Susan, the youngest of nine children, struggled with unemployment, depression, anxiety, and coping with the death of one of her sisters, her mother, and her father, who dreamed of becoming a singer himself. The agonizing pain she felt didn't even end there.
The Family Matters Didn't End There
A rumored feud between Susan and one of her older brothers, Gerry, made waves in 2013. He reportedly threatened to kill himself and demanded Susan to hand over more than $60,000! Susan's mind began to wander, but it seemed as if her life was getting better...
Her Very First Boyfriend At Age 53
For the first time ever, Susan found herself a man at the age of 53! Her new love interest, an American doctor, was the "perfect gentleman." But just as she was beginning to get comfortable with her happy life, things took a turn for the worse...
The Past Became The Present
Susan was devasted when her older sister, Brigid, suddenly died of cancer in 2015. She was her rock, and so, Susan had to lay low from her singing career for some time to grieve. At one point, a meltdown resulted in a showdown with police.
Cops On The Scene
In 2016, Susan got herself escorted out of an airport by police after she suffered a meltdown while in distress. A few weeks earlier, she was seen running through another airport screaming for help.
Overwhelmed By Fear
Between her struggles with anxiety and Asperger's syndrome, Susan was often fearful that she would fail. "It's a very difficult subject to talk about because you always feel that eyes are on you, and people view you as different."
Staying Behind The Scenes
As of 2014, Susan's net worth was estimated at a whopping $33 million. So with the amount of money she was making and because of her mental struggles, the singing sensation took a step back from the spotlight. But not for too long...
Back On Track
Despite her health scares, Susan powered through the rough times and recently came out with a new album in late 2016! The Christmas album, A Wonderful World, even includes a special duet with the late Nat King Cole.
Making Music, Dropping Fat
Even though Susan Boyle's latest album was the lowest-charting album in the UK to date, Simon Cowell still offered her a new multi-album contract. And Susan even dropped 28 pounds in hopes of reversing a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis!
Hoping For A Child Of Her Own
Susan just has so much love she to give, she's considered adopting a child. "I want to adopt a child who doesn't have much, who I can really give something to. It's a way of giving back for me," she said.
So Where Is She Now?
Nowadays, Susan Boyle is still living in Scotland. But because of her crippling struggles with Asperger's syndrome, she's not sure if she'll be going on tour anytime soon.
